Search YouTube and you'll find many videos about Radisson and Des Groseilliers. As well, there are more about the Hudson's Bay Company and the fur trade. Some are the products of serious scholars and some the results of school projects. Of the latter, it's encouraging to see that the story of the colorful duo can still inspire today's youth. On this page, I've put together a playlist of my favorites. I hope you find them both entertaining and informative.
The following video shows how important the fur trade was to New France in the 17th century. Because of it, the French were drawn into an ancient feud between the Algonquin-speaking and the Huron nations of eastern Canada and the Iroquois nations of present-day New York state. The result was the long-running Beaver Wars which eventually pitted the French and the Algonquin against the British and the Iroquois. Against this violent background Radisson and Des Groseilliers sought to give France the advantage in the fur trade which it arrogantly spurned. Even if you don't understand French, this video is worth watching for a sense of the violence and adventure of the period.
